Join us for the 2013 Count!

It’s time to Count again! With the 2013 CWILA Count set to begin in the coming weeks, we are now actively seeking volunteers to help us count book reviews.

As a volunteer-run non-profit, we operate on limited resources, choosing to focus on publications with the widest circulation, while still maintaining regional representation in our selection. As we grow as an organization, we are committed to setting the bar higher in our collection of robust and meaningful data on gender representation in Canada’s literary review culture. Last year, our resources allowed us to add 10 new publications to the Count from across Canada. This year, we will need your help more than ever, as we increase the Count again. We are adding 4 French-language publications, and one major newspaper from Atlantic Canada, bringing the total publications in our Count up to 30!

In keeping with last year’s commitment to gathering inclusive and nuanced data on book reviews, we will record gender identification for both reviewer and reviewed author, and whether or not the reviewed author identifies as Canadian (by birth, citizenship, or residency).

We will require volunteers for two rounds of the Count:

An initial count for each publication, to start immediately and finish by March 31, 2014.

Verification of the initial counts, to start April 1, 2014 and finish by April 14, 2014.

Based on your availability and the number of hours you can devote to the Count, we will assign you blocks of reviews for either or both of these rounds. A set of instructions will be sent to you, along with an Excel spreadsheet to record the reviews.

Our time is short, so please let me know ASAP how much time (in hours) you can devote to the Count, within the dates above. The publications included in the 2013 Count are listed below; please indicate if you have a special preference for counting a particular publication (i.e. you have hard-copy issues from 2013, or you have online subscriber access).

This year, we will require several fluently bilingual volunteers to help us count the French-language publications, so be sure to let me know if you can help us out with that.

Many thanks for your quick reply!

Warmly,

Judith
